2nd July
There were a lot of very busy people at work this weekend trying to further the aims of B.M.O.G.C.
Saturday was bucket shaking in the Millgate centre and first and foremost I want to thank everyone who gave up some or all of the day to make it a success. Without your help nothing would have happened. All the usual people made the effort and I'd like to think that they enjoyed themselves.
I will let you know precisely how much was donated asap but in terms of raising the profile of the club and making important new contacts, the day was an unqualified success.
Saturday and Sunday saw boys and girls busy at two competitions. The boys at Pegasus on Saturday and girls at both Pegasus and Wingates on Sunday.
I'm waiting for full scores from Pegasus but have been told that everybody did themselves proud. I will post details soon.
I spent Sunday at the Wingates center at the Rochdale invitational competition. It is always a nice comp and inspite of a record number of entries this year Cheryl and the Rochdale crew ran it with military precision. Respect Cheryl, Stallion.
We had 18 girls in the comp and returned home with 17 medals and two awards for the most artistic floor routines.
Big thanks to Bev and Tracy.
Special mentions to.........
Grace Pauline 2nd on floor & 3rd overall Novice U8
Reagan Thorley 3rd on vault Pre novice U7
Jenna ''Marmalade'' Holt most artistic floor routine Novice U10
Annabel Clarke 1st on vault 2nd on floor & 2nd overall Pre novice U7
Olivia Johnstone 3rd on vault & 3rd overall Novice U9
Ashley ''Scooby'' Conway 3rd on vault Novice U11
Katy Holmes 1st on vault 2nd on floor & 1st overall Pre noviceU9
Lily Wilkinson 3rd on vault 2nd on floor & 3rd overall Pre noviceU9
Mollie Gamble 2nd on floor and 2nd Overalland most artistic floor routine Novice U13.
And Ariana Naz who completed her first ever competition without the slightest hint of nerves.
Well done girls.

Hi Mike,
Whilst surfing the net today I came upon the website for Sutton Gymnastics. Unfortunately through lack of funding etc etc this club is about to close. They currently have a petition going to parliament asking for more support for gymnastics as a sport etc. I thought it might be nice to show another club suffering hardship and disapointment our support (especially as folk have been so good to us!)
The link is
The petition can also be signed from this site.
Cath
Strange eh? When we can find £400,000 for a logo? Mike.

Mike.
I recieved this E mail from Dave Bond , the club teasurer. If you would like to represent the club at the Local Area Partnership, please drop me a line and details of time and venue will be forwarded to you.
Mike,
I have received notification from BMBC of an open Forum for Bury East LAP on Wednesday 13th June at 6.30pm. They are writing to community groups (as local service providers) in this area asking them if they would like to nominate a representative to join the LAP.
I don't know if we (as a club) would be interested but it might be an idea to ask on the website if anyone can represent the club, preferably I suppose someone who lives in Bury East.
Dave
29th May
Seven weeks since our gym burnt down and things keep moving on. There have been some rumblings of concern about progress towards a temporary home and a new, permanent one. Be assured that even though you may not have heard much news about this, things are moving forward.
As I write, a team from Bury Council are hard at work with a design team on plans for the rebuilding of Goshen. This is not as simple as it may seem because their brief is to design a building that we could extend or add to at almost any stage. The only condition being that we have sufficient funds!
As for our temporary home, a site which would be ideal has been found but there are one or two more hurdles that have to be overcome before any announcement can be made. I am not going to jeopardise what are tricky negotiations by saying any more here. Suffice to say that as soon as any news is available it will be published here.
So, all in all, we owe an enormous debt of thanks to the council in general and Mr. Neil Long in particular. Our future is to a great extent in their hands and I am sure you will join me in offering them our thanks.
Mike
29th May.
A great big thank you to Frank Baldwin, the gaffer at The Summit pub in Littleborough who held a race night on Sunday for the club. Many thanks too to the folk from Rochdale OGC who supported the event and provided a raffle. Between them they raised £275 towards our cause.
Stallion.
The pub will be holding the 2nd of four quiz nights this Thursday 31st, again to raise funds for the club. The quiz will start about 9.30 and won't finish too late so come on down if you can.
Mike
29th May

Closing date for applications-31/5/07 Mike
But shouldn't you be up Holcombe hill that day ?
29th May
Ever wondered why that kid from another club scored 0.235 more than yours? Well, if you'd like to know, there is a pre-judging course being held at Rochdale gym on Sunday 24/6/07. The idea is to give you an insight into the judging process and serve as an introduction if you would like to qualify as a judge. We are always short of qualified judges! It is open to both coaches and parents and if you would like to attend, please email me. Mike.
29th May
Boys recreational classes are due to resume at Woodhey High school on Thursday 7th June. If you have boys who attended the classes at Goshen, we will be in touch during the next few days to let you know details of times. Directions are on the training times and venues page. Mike
29th May
A couple of dates for your diary.
On Saturday 7th July, we will be holding a disco/fun night for the children at Radcliffe Civic hall. Not really a fundraiser, just an opportunity for the kids to get together. More details to follow.
Friday 12th October. A Grand Autumn Ball. To be held at The Bolholt Hotel,Walshaw, Bury. Sounds like a splendid event to me, food, music, entertainment etc. and best of all adults only. Again, more info to follow.
Mike
29th May
A lot of fun was had at Arlene's coffee afternoon on Friday. The raffle was a great success and, judging by the amount of cake that was scoffed, so was the whole event. Thanks to all involved, particularly Holly Mount School who generously allowed this event to take place. No doubt those who won the gym membership prizes are busy right now working off all the calories consumed! Can we have the recipe for the chocolate cake, please? Details of funds raised to follow. Mike
20th May
Here's the idea folks. We would like to build a collection of recipes with an eye to producing a book which we can market, with any profit being returned to the club. The recipe can be for a drink, starter, main course, pudding, sweet, cake etc.etc. If you have a favourite Halloween snack or a family Christmas tradition (Ours is Mikes marvelous Bread sauce, don't really know why!) then send it in.It would be nice to arrange the book with a recipe for each day so that'll be 365 recipes won't it?
It doesn't need to be Haute Cuisine, even if it's a simple sarnie it can go in the book. Recipes that are suitable for children to prepare would be very welcome.
Please email your efforts marked Recipes to.....
Thanks Mike.
19th May
A big thank you goes to both Mrs Arlene Rees and Holly Mount Primary School. Why? Because they have organised a coffee afternoon on Friday 25th May between 2.15 and 3.15pm. All are welcome but please bear in mind that access to the school is a little tricky along a single track road. Coffee, tea, cakes and a raffle are on offer in aid of our cause, so if you can get along there please do. Arlene has done a magnificent job of parting local businesses from all sorts of goodies for the raffle and we are very grateful to the following businesses and individuals for their generosity. If you are ready, here comes the list of prizes on offer
*2hrs ironing-The Laundry room Ramsbottom*A set of acrylic nails-Sculptures*£25 voucher-Akita Ramsbottom*Main course for 4-Mealmakers*£150 cleaning-Chemdry*Evening bag-Chique Ramsbottom*£5 voucher Boudoir Ramsbottom*Hamper-Taste Fine Foods Ramsbottom*£10 voucher-Drury's Menswear Ramsbottom*5x7day passes-Gymworks Bury*Studio session & 8x10 print-Camtia Photography Tottington*Photo frame-Thomas Wood Jeweller Bury*£15 voucher Lifewear*Voucher-Miss Goody2Shoes Tottington*Set of educational books-Jake Wakefield*donation from Bellini Italian Restaurant Ramsbottom*Childrens toy -Essential Paper*Cut & Blow Dry -Avanti*5x Drinks & 2hrs creche -The Frog Coffee Shop Ramsbottom. 17th May
Those nice people at The Summit Inn, Todmorden Road, Littleborough have decided that they would like to help us.
They are holding Quiz nights over the next four Thursday nights.(24th & 31st May and 7th & 14th June) It would be nice if a few folk could get up there, maybe as a team, to show our gratitude.
They are also planning a race evening, possibly at the Bank holiday weekend, but we have yet to confirm .As soon as I can get a postcode I will post directions here.
Mike.
On Saturday 19th may, the boys session will be at Rochdale 12.45--4.00pm and not Vernon park.
Paul Hocckwart.
14th May.
If you have any pictures of the gym,as it used to be, I would very much like to see them. I was asked today for pictures of the gym in the year 2000. They may come in very useful in the weeks to come. If you have any and you are able to email them please do. If you have any photos but can't email them, please pass them on to one of the coaches and I will make sure that you get them back. Thanks, Mike.
14th May
From Thursday17th May, any of the girls who are competing in The G.M.G.A. floor and vault or the Wingates competitions, can come to Woodhey H.S. to practice their floor routines. You can come any time between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday or Friday (or both). Please bring your music with you. The idea is for you to work on the dance elements of your routine, not the moves. There will be coaches present but they will be coaching recreational classes.Mike
12th May
Sorry if the news is a bit late. You have B.T. to thank for that. You are probably aware that we raised an enormous amount of money from our efforts of last weekend, and I would like to echo the thanks that has been offered to all the volunteers. Not bad for beginners!
However, we have not yet paid due respect to the good people who actually put the money in the buckets. So, to the shoppers at Asda Marketside, the football fans from Bury and Mansfield and the nationwide collection of people who made a donation in Newcastle. THANK YOU!
You deserve our gratitude for your understanding and generosity, and if you ever need our help, I would like to think we would be able to be similarly generous.
Mike
12th May
All the pictures of our fundraising efforts are now on the fund raising page.(What a shocker!)
Mike.

Mike.
6th May
Yesterday was as mad a day as we have had yet. Folks all over the place, competing and bucket shaking. I will post the boy's results in full as soon as they are ready.
We have more boys competing today and tomorrow at the N.D.P. finals in Newcastle and we wish them the best of luck. Thanks again to the spectators and competing clubs there for their generosity.
A big thank you too, to the shoppers and staff at Asda Marketside Bury, and the supporters of Bury F.C AND Mansfield Town F.C. who were all more than generous towards us.
Around about 7 pm last night , The Bowdens, Birds and Reids started counting the coins and notes that had been collected. We finished (after a short break for refreshment) at about 10pm. O.K. we're not the fastest money counters in the West, but it gives you some idea of the number of coins we had to count. I won't give you the exact figure here, the bank will give us that, but suffice to say that we have, through our own efforts, more than matched the splendid donation from Warburtons bakery.
Thanks to Hockeysticks for asking Bury F.C. for their permission to collect and Sue Johnson at Asda for her more than kind help.
As I write, more collections are going on both at Asda and at Newcastle. We will be collecting again at Newcastle tomorrow.
Who knows what the final figure will be? I am sure that when you know, you will feel that all the hard work that has gone into this effort has been rewarded.
What are you doing on the 19th? Take a look at the events diary.
Mike

4th May
Another busy day in the life of B.M.O.G.C.
Firstly our thanks are due to The Greater Manchester Gymnastics Association. Having heard of recent events, they have very kindly purchased a new pommel horse for the club at the not inconsiderable cost of £1200. The horse is currently at Vernon Park G.C. but will be moved to our new home as soon as we have one.
British Gymnastics have given us permission to collect from the audience at this weekend's Boys N.D.P. finals at Newcastle. They will also announce our plight at each of the presentations. A HUGE thankyou to B.G.. Once again we see the Gymnastics community helping out.
A number of members of the club committee met today with Mr.Simon Doughty, general manager to
Mr. Stefan Sikorski, owner of the Bolholt Hotel. Mr Sikorski has very kindly offered us room
at The Bolholt to have a Summer/Autumn Ball. Dates are yet to be confirmed but I'm sure you will join me in sending
a large thankyou to both Mr. Doughty and Mr. Sikorski. Watch this space.
Meanwhile, Paul Reay and I met with the Head teacher of the Derby High School, Mrs. Byrne.
The school has offered to help in any way it can.We are working to arrange a date and time
for a session, perhaps for the pre/senior squad girls.Mrs. Byrne was also able to offer us
the use of the school for a barbecue/funday and the use of the school's excellent facilities
for a concert or disco.
The Derby High School deserves our thanks , as does Woodhey Highschool. Is this the wrong place to ask why we can't have stronger links, both social and educational, between our schools and the likes of B.M.O.G.C.?
Perhaps, if such links existed, the young people, who find themselves with nothing to do in the evening, would be vaulting or playing basket ball or swimming or dancing etc., rather than holding impromptu barbecues. Perhaps.
Mike.
PRE AND SENIOR SQUAD GIRLS

I don't need your payment by then but, if I have not received an email by then, I cannot enter you into the competition.

3rd May
Our thanks are due to all those who attended last night's fund raising meeting. It could've turned into a bit of a bun fight but Paul Reid did a splendid job and we worked through the agenda with ease. I don't know if you've ever tried chairing a meeting, but it's a daunting job and we owe Paul our thanks.
In spite of the fact that some chaps were playing football at the time, plenty of people attended and we garnered lots of information and made lots of contacts. It really is amazing, if we talk to one another, how much talent and ability is available to us. When the minutes of the meeting are typed up you will see them here.
There will be more information on the fund raising page in the next few days but in the mean time I can tell you that...
The search for interim accommodation is well in hand and one location seems to be a clear favourite, we expect further news soon.
We elected a team of fund raising co-ordinators who will oversee individual events and, with the help of the Club committee, research and initiate new events.
A team of volunteers agreed to muck in and to work on any current project.
If you feel you can help with any of these projects , please get in touch.
An exchange of ideas took place. Everything from the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride, Cath's spooky night in a haunted location, barbecues, dinner dances, discos, karaoke, duck races, race nights, fashion shows, car stickers, recipe books, treasure hunts and a rat strangling competition in Copenhagen (only joking) was discussed and some of these ideas will be taken forward (not the rat strangling).
If you think you lack the confidence or ability to help with the enormous amount of work that needs to be done, don't think you will be expected to work alone. We will only achieve our goal if we work together and support one another. All we need is a little from everyone and we will achieve a lot.
2nd May

A big thank you to everyone within the club for your patience and understanding, we are trying our best to find temporary accommodation.
Paul Hockwart.
1st May
O.K. Here we go. Three weeks after our gymnastics world fell apart, where are we now?
All the children who are B.G. insured have some kind of training each week. It may not be where or, exactly, when you would like, but all our gymnasts have a gym to go to.
Recreational gymnasts have been a little more problematic. Trying to find a facility that could accommodate up to 300 gymnasts per week is not an easy nut to crack, and anybody who ran an operation that could immediately cope with them would have been sacked a long time ago. Rest assured that we are working hard and we will be able to tell you soon about new arrangements. At the moment we have been offered time at Woodhey Highschool. Details will follow at the earliest opportunity.
We are also looking at several local locations for a semi-permanent home for the entire club. Obviously, these are delicate matters. Suffice to say that there are several irons in the fire and news will be updated as soon as we have something we can say without jeopordising the outcome of any negotiations.
PRE AND SENIOR SQUAD GIRLS
If you would like to compete in the North West floor and vault championship at Fit City, Salford, on 2nd and 3rd of June, please email Mike via the links page with your name and DOB. Could you also please bring a cheque for 12 pounds made payable to BMOGC to your next training session. The closing date is the 7th of May. I don't need your payment by then but, if I have not received an email by then, I cannot enter you into the competition.
Mike.
24th April
I will have news tomorrow of training times for pre squad and senior squad girls, the line between the two, needs must, be blurred at the moment. Just now, its a bit like pitching a tent on shifting sand or pushing an elephant up the stairs. My long suffering wife and son, Denise and Jake are now getting concerned about the number of elephants at the top of our stairs. Access to the bathroom is limited. Mike
29th April -
Mike, Kath, Claire and Geoff took their senior squad girls to Middleton this morning and everyone worked well. It was nice to see everyone back doing the sport they love. Thanks again to Glenn who has a knighthood coming his way, if it is anything to do with us.
This afternoon Paul and I took a group of girls to Rochdale to train. Everyone worked hard and seemed extremely happy to be back in the gym again. We must say a huge thank you to Cheryl, Fiona and everyone who has offered to help us during our crisis.
As I am writing this Kath and Claire are teaching their pre-squad girls up at Rochdale ( Mike is cooking tea) and I am sure they will be enjoying themselves lots too.
Glad to see everyone back in training and hope we can keep you all working hard even though we are in strange surroundings. We will see you all again next weekend in the same gyms at the same times. Hopefully we can prepare ourselves for the up coming competitions in the next few months, and go show everyone that Bury Gymnastics Club can't be beaten by a fire. See you all soon, Kate.
26th April
Our first fund raising event has been arranged thanks to ASDA (opposite Bury Market). BMOGC has been given permission to collect loose change shoppers might have – encouraging them to ‘fill our buckets’.
The money collection will take place just inside the store on Saturday 5th May (8am to 6pm) and Sunday 6th May (11am to 5pm). WE NEED VOLUNTEERS – COACHES, COMMITTEE MEMBERS, PARENTS OF GYMNASTS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE GYMNASTS THEMSELVES.
Further details can be found on the fundraising page.
26th April
At last we have some new training times for the Senior and Pre squad girls. It may be short notice for this weekend, but we have been given various slots by local clubs who have rearranged their entire schedules to give us these times. A BIG thankyou to Cheryl and Glenn at Rochdale and Middleton for their help. Just ask yourselves, would we be able and willing to help other clubs in our situation? I like to think that we would , so thanks again.
A minority sport? Perhaps in the eyes of a football obsessed world, but, at the moment the sense of community and common purpose is second to none.
Senior Squad girls will be training at Middleton from 9.30 to 12.30 on Sundays commencing 29th April.
The Pre Squad girls , Paul and Mike's group will be training at Rochdale Gymnastics Club from 1.30 to 4.30 on Sundays.
The Pre Squad girls, Kath and Claire's groups will ba training at Rochdale Gymnastics Club From 5.00 to 8.00 on Sundays.
I know these times are not ideal and I know that most of you will have other things you would prefer, or are obliged to do at these times, just as we the coaches have. At the moment we are unable to be choosy, and don't worry about not attending if you can't. All we want to do is to get the girls back in the gym . We will sort out the details later and hopefully we will all be back under the same roof soon. I will be in touch by phone tomorrow 27/4 and if you have any problems please contact me by e-mail.
All the details of how to get to these locations are on our training times and venues page. You can get directions from google maps there.
See you soon Mike.
23rd April
It may be Saint George's day but we were obliged to start fighting fire breathing dragons a fortnight early! A meeting has been arranged at Castle Leisure Centre on Wednesday 2nd May at 7pm for ANYONE and everyone who is interested in fundraising for the club. Don't be shy, if you would like to help we will be glad to see you. Although we don't have a gym at the moment in years to come someone will benefit from your efforts now. Please do what you can.
23rd April
Our plight has been featured on the British Gymnastics website.Although you may have read the body of the article here first, if you would like to see the article again please follow this link.
22nd April
How good are those results? If we can do that well just now, imagine what we could do if we had a gym! If you are interested in fund raising we are organising a meeting for the 2nd of May for everyone to get together. Soon there will be a specific link to our fundraising co-ordinator, until then, please continue to contact us via the links provided or use the fund raising shoutbox on the fundraising page.
We have got lots of pictures of the Phil Tighe competition and we will have many more in the future. It would be nice to be able to post them immediately, but, if we want to post any pictures on the web, we will need the express written permission of the parents of the children in them. It's a crazy world but, legally, this is something we must do. We will provide you with a form so that you can say yes or no. Details will follow. Mike.

Word has reached us that some lunatics are planning to throw themselves out of an aeroplane to raise money for the club. Details of the names of these crackpots and how to sponsor them will follow shortly.
Mike
20th April
If you have ANY skill that you think could be put to good use during the present crisis please get in touch. As we progress through the coming weeks and months the more support we can get, the better. There are an enormous number of people working hard to get us back on our feet (and doing a darn good job!) but as they say...Many hands make light work. In particular we would like to find someone with marketing skills. If you feel you can help please email us
We are also looking for an events co-ordinator.The role involves organising local fund raising and social events. It will be a busy job but I'm sure we can find a leader and a willing team, so ,let's be hearing from you!
Mike.
20th April
From today forward all members of B.M.O.G.C. will be expected to eat only Warburtons bread.
If you read the following you will understand why........
Dear Mike,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you directly.
One of my colleagues, Duncan Tyrell has spoken to me about the recent arson attack on Goshen Sports Centre.
We are genuinely sorry to hear about such an incident, having being victims of a fire ourselves and recognising that the BMOGC plays such a central role in the Bury community.
I am writing therefore to see if we can offer some assistance to your appeal. We would very much like to help out by purchasing a new piece of equipment or new resource for you. We would like to donate £1,000 to the appeal.
Please could I ask you to contact me to discuss?
I look forward to hearing from you and again, hope the appeal is going well.
Thanks Jane

A big thankyou to Bury Metro. They are happy for the contracted coaches to work outside the borough to train at other gyms. Now that we have this clearance we can progress a little faster towards taking the pre and senior squads to Rochdale and Middleton. This exercise is more difficult than you might think, but if I can just ask for a tad more patience I am sure we will resolve this matter in a couple of days. Mike

It's been a very busy day!
For any girls in the pre-squad ,if you are not yet a British Gymnastics member you will need to register in order to train at gyms outside the borough. We have negotiated a rate of twenty pounds for Club membership and B.G. membership which will last until September this year. The forms are available at Castle leisure centre, just ask at the foyer, fill it in and leave a cheque made payable to B.M.O.G.C. We will do the rest. As soon as we have registered everyone we will be able to let you know about precise timings and venues. I am still waiting to hear about extra slots at Middleton.

News from last night's committee meeting.
We are currently looking at several sites with a view to finding a new temporary home. There are several possible venues, and two in particular look very promising. We will keep you posted. Please be patient, few of us have ever had to find a new home for 1000 mad keen, energetic children before! Let alone a home with changing facilities, toilets, good access, heating, parking space, etc. etc. etc.
Any member of the girls pre squad or senior squad who is not currently a member of the club and B.G. will soon be able to download a form from this site. With this membership you will be able to train at any gym.
We can't take you to another gym to train without this insurance.Details to follow tomorrow. We have been offered times at both Rochdale and Middleton gyms for the pre and senior squad girls but we are still waiting for Bury Metro to release the coaches to work at these venues. AS SOON AS WE GET THE GO AHEAD WE WILL CONTACT YOU TO ARRANGE TRAINING TIMES.
The slots we have been offered are -Rochdale 1.30 to 4.30 Sunday for 8 girls, and 5.00 to 8.00 for 16 girls.
Middleton have offered us Wednesday 5.30 to 8.30 for 8 or maybe 16 girls. We may also be offered more training time at Middleton.
This is a copy of a letter which Paul has sent to The Gymnast magazine.
Dear Trevor,
If you had not heard of the devastating news, that on Monday 9th April at around 9.40pm, our gymnastics centre in Bury was burnt to the ground, indications from the fire service say that it was arson. The gym caters for up to 500 children a week of all ages who now have nowhere to train. We have been working with Bury council this last week in trying to rehouse our club, hopefully it will not be too long before we are back, up and running in a temporary facility.
On behalf of the club I would like to thank the clubs in the North West region for their fantastic response in re-housing our competitive gymnasts during this devastating time.
C.M.I.G., VERNON PARK, ROCHDALE, SALFORD, LIVERPOOL, GARSTANG, MIDDLETON, have opened their doors to our gymnasts and coaches, also other clubs have expressed their help in loaning us equipment for the temporary facility when we have found one.
The members of Bury have been fantastic in rallying round, by offering their services in any way to help the gymnasts continue their training, an emergency meeting was held at 48 hours notice and over 250 parents attended, the response was heartwarming and very positive.
Once again I would like to thank everyone in the sport of gymnastics for their phone calls of support and assistance, and hopefully in the not to distant future, we will be as one club again under one roof.

Girls Pre squad and Senior squad
Unfortunately, we will not be able to compete in the competitions we had planned to enter in May. I will arrange for all cheques to be returned as soon as possible.
Even if we had a facility to train in, I'm afraid that one of the casualties of the fire was our collection of floor music. If you have a copy of your music, please let me know.
On a happier note, we have been invited to take part in two comps. in the not too distant future.
